Allow hyphen/dash/minus/"-" in email address domain

I have recently changed email providers and my new email address contains a hyphen in the domain.  The web site and app will not allow me to update my email address.  It shows an error stating "Special characters and numbers are not allowed following the '@' portion of your email address."  I hyphen ("-") is a valid character for an email domain.
What's really funny, is that I am able to use this email address for this community feedback forum.

i.e.  first.last@email-domain
