I read that some phones are so old (think 2G - 3G) that a carrier's network no longer supports. That could cause the carrier to notify you to upgrade. OR possible, you bought a special program phone on installments and the program is expired, but that's a long shot trying to understand why you think you have to have a new phone to continue to service.
