I will be in Ecuador January through March 2023. Will I be able to call, text, or use WhatsApp to either the USA or Ecuador while there?

Sorry for my delayed response! Thank you for confirming Wi-Fi in Ecuador means the same thing there as it does here! It's still surprising to me WhatApp doesn't even require your phone to have cell service or a sim in order to run that application!
I'm good to go now, and appreciate all your help, Ron.

Your WhatsApp is going to work if your connected to internet ether Wi-Fi or a local sim or eSIM, if you wanna be able to call and text with your American number you have to activate Wi-Fi calling in the US and test it, then your gonna be able to make and receive calls/text in Ecuador. If you wanna have a local number you have to get a local sim in Ecuador. If you only need data you could get a eSIM (if your phone is eSIM compatible) you could download it in the US from a few sites https://www.airalo.com/ecuador-esim
https://esim.holafly.com/esim-ecuador/
https://yesim.app/marketplace/plans?id=63&iso=ec&name=Ecuador&type=country
remember even you only have data you could place call over ip though Google voice for free

If I understand you correctly, I'll be able to use my current phone with WhatsApp for calling and texting both from the US to Ecuador or vice versa. If so, that is a perfect solution for me!
Thanks again!

You're only going to be able to use your WhatsApp if you get a local Sim or you connected to Wi-Fi you're visible SIM card will have no service

I understand my visible SIM has no service in Ecuador, and I prefer not to purchase a local or eSIM unless I have to.
If I read you correctly, I can use WhatsApp in Ecuador if I'm "connected to Wi-Fi", but how do I do that? Do I have to purchase something?

You cannot purchase Wi-Fi, it's a way to connect to internet instead of a hard cable, usually restaurants and hotels have free Wi-Fi. That's why WhatsApp will work over any internet connection because WhatsApp uses internet it has nothing to do with visible, even you take out your sim all your WhatsApps will still come in if your connected to any internet connection
