I have an iPhone XS.  Visible says it is compatible but then the IMEI is not compatible.  I understand saying that I have a newer iPhone to get the physical sim card but are there any tricks to getting the e SIM?

No there is no way, because eSIM is in the hardware of the phone you can't change it, if they can't activate it with eSIM there is no way around
