If I bring my own phone , will the contacts and text messages get carried over

Yes they will! Depending on phone type, they should even migrate if you get a new device! For example, on Android, contacts can be synced with your Google account. So can apps, messages and other stuff!

Sync to your cloud or google and then they will be backed up
