I am not sure if you will lose them or not, I think the phone stores them but not sure. I would suggest you find a SMS backup app at the Apple store. A quick Google search shows SMS Backup+ is available at Apple.
I use SMS Backup and Restore but that is Android and not sure if it is available for Apple. I like to back up my texts so I don't lose them if I lose my phone or something happens to it.
