Activate new iPhone on old carrier before signing up & porting number?

I ordered an new iPhone. I want to port my number from Verizon to the new iPhone on Visible when it arrives. Do I need to activate the new iPhone on Verizon prior to becoming a member on Visible or can I signup on Visible, select 'bring my number' and activate the new iPhone that has never been on Verizon to start the number porting process? I am concerned that activating a new phone on Verizon and immediately porting the number will be a red flag and stop the process of porting. Thanks for any guidance.

You can do either but why bother with the extra step of activating it on Verizon just to port switch it? Activate the new phone on visible and port your number in. Use eSIM; it’s fast and easy.
